A COMPARISON OF CURRICULUM IN BACCALAUREATE DEGREE PROGRAMS IN AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT AgEcon

This research categorizes required and elective courses for 112 different 4-year baccalaureate programs in agribusiness management in the U.S. These included 50 degrees and 62 majors, options, or concentrations within degrees. Over 50% of the 50 degree programs do not require international and global dimensions of agriculture, and courses in management, marketing, or finance from the College of Business. Almost two-thirds of the 50 degree programs do not require an integrative course such as strategy.

ACCEPTABILITY OF IRRADIATION TECHNOLOGY TO FOOD SERVICE PROVIDERS AgEcon

Restaurant managers in Kansas were surveyed to investigate attitudes toward food irradiation and willingness to buy and serve irradiated hamburger patties. Results indicate that 54% of restaurants are willing to purchase irradiated ground beef. Median willingness-to-pay for irradiation for females was estimated at 6.25c/lb and for males at 3.94c/lb.

Agency Theory Issues in the Food Processing Industry AgEcon

The objective is to identify significant determinants of performance for food processing firms over the 1992 to 2003 time period, focusing particularly on the issue of family control. Variables measuring firm effects such as asset size, governance, income distribution, and risk are used to explain return on equity. This study builds upon previous research by including a measure of income distribution in the food processing industry. Governance variables are found to be significant determinants of return on equity. The results found no evidence of agency problems in family-controlled firms during this time period.

An Analysis of the 2002 Farm Bill’s Value-Added Producer Grants Program AgEcon

Our objective is to identify the determinants for success among USDA’s Value- Added Producer Grants (VAPG) program recipients. Business development has become an important program in departments of agricultural economics. Market share was found to be an important determinant of VAPG success. Size variables including greater sales and increased grant dollars, as well as a lower number of producers, were also determinants of business success. Departments of agricultural economics are likely best able to assist VAPG recipients by providing information on price discovery, explaining their relationship to potential plant location, and providing education on best management practices to help producers avoid costly mistakes.

Cargill: Biotechnology and Value Creation in Wheat AgEcon

About 40 percent of the world's food supply came from rice and wheat-based foods. The genome of wheat (a genome is a set of chromosomes) was much larger than those of other crops such as rice. Deciphering the wheat genome was a much more complex process. Wheat had six DNA strands (e.g., humans have only a double-helix DNA strand) and almost twice as many genes as humans. GM wheat would be available for production by 2004. The objective of this case is to describe: segregation and identity-preservation issues in the wheat value chain, the role of Cargill in that value chain, and issues surrounding the introduction of genetically modified wheat.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MASTER'S PROGRAMS IN AGRIBUSINESS MANAGEMENT AgEcon

This study describes and compares agribusiness master’s programs in North America. These programs include the master of business administration (MBA) and master in (or “of”) agribusiness (MAB) degrees. Accredited MBA programs with an agribusiness emphasis are required to have a clear required core of courses in finance, management, marketing management, and human behavior. Additional required courses in policy, agricultural marketing, production or managerial economics, and quantitative methods are also frequently required. MAB programs have more diversity regarding the four core subjects with a greater percentage of the courses taught within departments of agricultural economics. The objective is to estimate consumer willingness-to-pay (WTP) for pork chops produced under an integrated program which is designed to reduce the incidence of Salmonella. A double-bounded model is estimated to determine Kansas and Indiana consumers WTP for these pork chops. The median WTP is $4.92 per pound.

Country-of-Origin Labeling for Uruguayan Beef AgEcon

The objective of this research is to identify Chilean consumer attitudes towards COO (Country-of-Origin) labeling, determine the importance of COO, and identify consumers who are most likely to buy COO-labeled beef products from Uruguay. The results suggest that age, number of children at home, whether the interviewee was the primary person responsible for meal selection, and whether interviewees purchased beef from different countries were significant determinants of whether a Chilean interviewee regarded COO as important. Age, income level, beef purchase frequency, and homemaker were significant determinants of whether an interviewee would purchase COO-labeled beef from Uruguay. Welch Foods saw its purpose as building long-term value in the cooperative and releasing that value back to the grower-owners over time and to provide a reliable market for their grapes through excellence in product quality, customer service, market responsiveness and consumer satisfaction. Welch's processed 50 percent of Concord grapes and 80 percent of Niagara grapes produced in the United States into juices, jellies, jams and other products. The objective of this executive interview is to introduce Dan Dillon and Welch Foods and describe challenges faced by a producer-owned cooperative in the 21st century. The interview was conducted at the 2003 Farmer Cooperatives program in Kansas City.

Determinants of Return on Equity in U.S. Local Farm Supply and Grain Marketing Cooperatives AgEcon

Farm supply cooperatives are an important component of the retail agribusiness industry in the United States. The objective of this research is to identify financial variables that are determinants of return on equity in these cooperatives. Firm effects are important and their effect is the result of managerial decision making and director policy. The estimated coefficient on asset size was not statistically significant, suggesting that return on equity is invariant to size over this period.

DIVERSIFICATION AND FIRM PERFORMANCE IN THE FOOD ECONOMY AgEcon

The effects of diversification on firm value in the food economy are analyzed within four major sectors: processing, wholesale, retail, and restaurant. We find that diversification in the food economy contributes to positive excess firm value. Processing firms are most likely to diversify while restaurant firms have the largest positive diversification effect.

ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF PHOSPHORUS - REDUCING TECHNOLOGIES IN PORK PRODUCTION AgEcon

Soil phosphorus levels have increased as pork production has become concentrated. Phosphorus-based manure management regulations for land application have been proposed by policy makers. The objective of this study is to determine benefits/costs of adopting two alternatives for reducing phosphorus: synthetic amino acids or phytase. An optimization model is constructed to determine optimal excreted nitrogen and phosphorus from alternative feed ingredients. Results are derived using different manure storage and application systems. While the two alternatives are not least-cost ingredients, they become profitable when producers are constrained by land. An important result is that the net cost of manure is negative.
