Our objective is to identify the determinants for success among USDA’s Value- Added Producer Grants (VAPG) program recipients. Business development has become an important program in departments of agricultural economics. Market share was found to be an important determinant of VAPG success. Size variables including greater sales and increased grant dollars, as well as a lower number of producers, were also determinants of business success. Departments of agricultural economics are likely best able to assist VAPG recipients by providing information on price discovery, explaining their relationship to potential plant location, and providing education on best management practices to help producers avoid costly mistakes. |

About 40 percent of the world's food supply came from rice and wheat-based foods. The genome of wheat (a genome is a set of chromosomes) was much larger than those of other crops such as rice. Deciphering the wheat genome was a much more complex process. Wheat had six DNA strands (e.g., humans have only a double-helix DNA strand) and almost twice as many genes as humans. GM wheat would be available for production by 2004. The objective of this case is to describe: segregation and identity-preservation issues in the wheat value chain, the role of Cargill in that value chain, and issues surrounding the introduction of genetically modified wheat. |

This study describes and compares agribusiness masters programs in North America. These programs include the master of business administration (MBA) and master in (or of) agribusiness (MAB) degrees. Accredited MBA programs with an agribusiness emphasis are required to have a clear required core of courses in finance, management, marketing management, and human behavior. Additional required courses in policy, agricultural marketing, production or managerial economics, and quantitative methods are also frequently required. The objective of this research is to identify Chilean consumer attitudes towards COO (Country-of-Origin) labeling, determine the importance of COO, and identify consumers who are most likely to buy COO-labeled beef products from Uruguay. The results suggest that age, number of children at home, whether the interviewee was the primary person responsible for meal selection, and whether interviewees purchased beef from different countries were significant determinants of whether a Chilean interviewee regarded COO as important. Welch Foods saw its purpose as building long-term value in the cooperative and releasing that value back to the grower-owners over time and to provide a reliable market for their grapes through excellence in product quality, customer service, market responsiveness and consumer satisfaction. Welch's processed 50 percent of Concord grapes and 80 percent of Niagara grapes produced in the United States into juices, jellies, jams and other products. The objective of this executive interview is to introduce Dan Dillon and Welch Foods and describe challenges faced by a producer-owned cooperative in the 21st century. Soil phosphorus levels have increased as pork production has become concentrated. Phosphorus-based manure management regulations for land application have been proposed by policy makers. The objective of this study is to determine benefits/costs of adopting two alternatives for reducing phosphorus: synthetic amino acids or phytase. An optimization model is constructed to determine optimal excreted nitrogen and phosphorus from alternative feed ingredients. Results are derived using different manure storage and application systems. While the two alternatives are not least-cost ingredients, they become profitable when producers are constrained by land. An important result is that the net cost of manure is negative. |
